Grocery List!

Ok, so many of you have been asking where you can get some of the foods on the New West Diet. Here's a list of some of the food items off the top of my head.

  • Raw fruits- many of the local, ethnic (Armenian, Hispanic, etc.) mini markets are the best places to find fresh fruit and vegetables. Plus they usually have very competitive prices. In Burbank check out Golden Farms and in Glendale a good place is Pacific Food Mart.
  • Raw vegetables (or lightly steamed)
  • Brown rice- Royal Basmati Brown rice is available at any Armenian or Middle Eastern store for about $7 for a 6lbs bag. Also available at Vons from time to time.
  •  Grilled fish- Frozen wild fish can be expensive but shop around. Trader Joes is a good place to start. Vons has seasonal wild salmon at a good price. And check out your neighborhood fish market. Glendale has a good market called Fish King.
  • Selected herbs- local ethnic market.
  • Whole grains- Whole Foods and occasionally Trader Joes.
  • Ezechiel bread- You can actually find this at Vons, Ralphs, Trader Joe's, etc. But the freshest (important because it can get stale) bread is from Trader Joe's. And they offer it at a good price.
  • 1-2 litres good water- My personal favorite is Smartwater but any good, purified water, even filtered at home is good. At our office we also offer Structured water, which increases intra-cellular hydration. Comes in 1/2 liter bottles.
  • Raw Dairy- yes, this means raw milk. If you haven't had it you are missing out. It tastes great! Go to Full 'o' Life in Burbank for the best price ($4/liter). Also available at Whole Foods. They also offer raw butter, cheeses and cream.
In summary, Trader Joe's, Full 'O' Life, Golden Farms (or another mini market), Vons and Whole Foods are the places I shop in that order.
